Best Practices for Dance Organisations

To ensure the highest standards of child protection, Dancesport Scotland recommends the following best practices for all dance organisations:

1. Create a Safe Environment. Establish a culture of openness where children feel comfortable speaking up. Ensure that all areas where activities take place are safe and secure.  This is especially the case where a public/community venue is being used for dancing activities and others may be accessing it for different purposes. Ensure that insurances are comprehensive and up-to date.

2. Effective Supervision. Ensure children are always supervised during activities. Implement a buddy system or have multiple adults present during sessions to reduce the risk of abuse. Ensure that appropriate disclosure checks are in place and up-to-date for all teachers and assistants.

3. Clear Communication. Maintain clear lines of communication with children, parents, and guardians and provide them with information on child protection policies and procedures.

4. Age-Appropriate Activities. Design activities that are suitable for the participants' age, ability, and developmental stage. Ensure that children are not pushed beyond their physical or emotional limits. Be mindful that not all participants may wish to compete but just enjoy dancing and making/being with friends.

5. Confidential Reporting Mechanisms. Establish a confidential system for reporting concerns or allegations of abuse. Ensure that children and adults know how to use this system.

6. Regular Policy Reviews. Review child protection policies and procedures regularly, particularly after any incident or change in legislation. Update them as necessary to reflect current best practices.

7. Engage Parents and Guardians. Where appropriate, involve parents and guardians in activities. Keep them informed about the organisation’s child protection measures and encourage their feedback.

8. Training and Education. Provide ongoing training for all staff and volunteers in child protection, including recognising signs of abuse, handling disclosures, and understanding the organisation's policies.

9. Responding to Bullying. Implement clear procedures for dealing with bullying. Educate children about its effects and create an environment where it is not tolerated.

10. Inclusive Practices. Ensure the environment is inclusive and non-discriminatory. Provide equal opportunities for all children, regardless of their background or ability.
